READ Learning Center provides specialized, multisensory math tutoring in Sacramento for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and adults. Instead of re-teaching classroom worksheets, our trained instructors use Making Math Real and Math-U-See to build number sense from hands-on objects to drawings to written numbers for learners with dyscalculia, dyslexia, ADHD, and math anxiety.
How Your Child Will Learn Math
How Making Math Real works
Making Math Real is a multisensory structured method that starts with hands-on work and moves to paper. Every lesson uses sight, sound, and touch together, and the sequence runs from concrete objects to drawings to written numbers. The method is built to support working memory and executive function, which is why it fits kids with dyscalculia and ADHD. It covers math from early number sense through higher math for students at every ability level. Dr. Leah Skinner wrote more about how Making Math Real helps struggling students.
A 2018 synthesis in Remedial and Special Education and a 2025 meta-analysis of 30 studies confirm that moving from physical objects to pictures to symbols is an evidence-based practice for students with math learning disabilities. In a 2019 brain-imaging study, children who learned to solve equations using hand gestures alongside spoken instruction recruited motor areas of the brain when solving new problems later. Engaging multiple pathways at once takes the bottleneck off working memory so skills stick.
How Math-U-See works
Math-U-See presents math skills in a logical sequence and uses color-coded blocks so a child can see and build each concept before writing it. Lessons show how and when to apply a concept in real situations. The program is mastery-based. A child builds a strong foundation in each concept before moving on, and concepts build on one another and get reviewed as the child goes.
At READ Learning Center, our math tutors teach with Making Math Real and Math-U-See. Because both programs organize math by skill level rather than grade level, your child starts at the exact point where their understanding is solid and builds forward without gaps.
Why Specialized Math Intervention Works When General Tutoring Hasn't
General tutoring centers and homework tutors reteach tonight's worksheet the same way your child's school already taught it. As we explain in our comparison of Sacramento tutoring options and our guide on accommodations vs. remediation, repeating grade-level worksheets does not rebuild a missing foundation in number sense.
Our after-school tutoring program is built for students who work hard and still fall behind because of how their brain processes numbers or steps. If you are wondering whether your child's homework struggles point to dyscalculia, ADHD working memory limits, or math anxiety, read Dr. Skinner's breakdown of why kids struggle with numbers and the six signs parents see during homework. Families who also want clarity on reading, spelling, or why a school evaluation left questions unanswered can book a private dyslexia and academic assessment at our center.

First-session placement assessment
During the first session, your child completes a math placement assessment so we can see which foundational skills are solid, where gaps start, and whether Making Math Real or Math-U-See is the better fit.
Twice-weekly remediation and progress tracking
Sessions are 50 minutes on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, or 6:00 PM. Daytime appointments (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) are available for homeschool families, and Fridays are available by request. Progress is tracked in Gradelink with report cards issued in June.

Questions Parents Ask About Math Tutoring at READ Learning Center
Does my child need a dyscalculia diagnosis to start math tutoring?
No, your child does not need a formal diagnosis to enroll at READ Learning Center. We run a math placement assessment on your child's first session to find their baseline skill level and build their instructional plan from there.
How do you decide between Making Math Real and Math-U-See for my child?
We match your child to Making Math Real or Math-U-See after their initial placement assessment. Both programs are multisensory, mastery-based, and start with hands-on materials before moving to written numbers. We look at how your child processes visual and physical information, where their working memory gets overloaded, and which skills need to be rebuilt so we can pair them with the method and math instructor that fit them best.
Why do you require at least two math sessions a week?
Twice-per-week attendance on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday is required because we work to mastery. Mastery is needed to ensure your child retains and applies what they are learning outside of the tutoring center. Families can also attend four days a week, or add Fridays when an instructor is available to expedite progress.
Do you offer daytime math tutoring for homeschool students or online sessions?
Yes. While our after-school sessions run Monday through Thursday at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00 PM, we have daytime appointments between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM for homeschooled or distance learning students, as well as live online tutoring options.
Can my child sign up for both reading and math tutoring?
Yes, many of our students attend for more than one subject because dyslexia and math difficulties frequently overlap. Alongside Making Math Real and Math-U-See, we provide structured literacy tutoring in Sacramento using the Wilson Reading System, Barton Reading and Spelling, Foundations in Sounds, and Just Words, plus writing instruction with the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
What if my child needs full-time support in every subject, not just after-school tutoring?
When twice-weekly tutoring isn't enough, our sister school, READ Academy of Sacramento, offers a full-time WASC-accredited private school for grades 2 through 12. Students at READ Academy receive daily structured literacy instruction, hands-on science and history, and multisensory math in a four-to-one student-to-teacher ratio. You can read what local parents share on our reviews page.
